Office 2007 Ribbon Bar Icons

Here's a brief run-own of how the Glyfz Office 2007 ribbon bar icons (or toolbar icons if you prefer) we have designed for application developers came about.

As you know Microsoft introduced the new ribbon bar as part of Office 2007 and with it came a whole new set of toolbar icons which, for the first time, came in 2 sizes, small, standard, 16x16's and a selection of larger 32x32 toolbar icons. The style was also updated which gave the icons a cleaner, more attractive look (although I don't like the gray faces!).

As the ribbon bar icons were highly likely to become the standard for a number of years we decided that offering our own sets of Office 2007 icons would benefit developers looking for a standard look and feel to their applications. We decided early on against the Vista style as 3D just doesn't work well for toolbar icons, you only need to check out the "Vista" style toolbar icons out there to see why.

When the first screen shots of O2010 started appearing we were a little worried that the Office 2007 ribbon bar icons style would be changed (yet again!) meaning a whole lot of work. However fortunately for both ourselves and our customers the style has remained the same making our icons suitable for applications for a good few years to come.

We have recently taken the opportunity to add over 800 new Office icons to the sets, which brings the total up to 2600+ unique icons (personally I hate it when companies say they have 1,000,000+ toolbar icons as they count all sizes, formats and states. Sounds impressive but is pretty meaningless.)

At the same time we reorganized the sets as having 3 Office 2007 miscellaneous sets wasn't really meaningful, so they have been merged in with the "standard" icon sets and a new Office 2007 developers icons set created.
